This would've been a new brand of terror we haven't seen here in the West if the plot had been undetected. SkyNews is calling it "Iraq-style" kidnapping.
SkyNews: The eight people arrested by terror police in Birmingham were allegedly planning a kidnap and Iraq-style execution, Sky News has learned.
Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said the plot involved randomly snatching an individual off the streets.
The kidnappers intended to release a video of the hostage pleading for their life and make various demands.
The suspects were detained under the Terrorism Act after a six-month surveillance operation involving officers from the West Midlands and the Met.
There's a Police briefing at 11:30 London time. So, who wants to bet they are Muslims?
Updated: SkyNews is now reporting that the kidnap victim ( an unnamed man in his 20's) was to be tortured and beheaded, with the video to be posted on the internet. The kidnappers were targeting a specific person, who's name is being withheld from the media.
Updated: It is also believed the targeted person's vocation was relevent to the planned attack.
Updated: It has been confirmed that the intended kidnap victim is a soldier in the British Army.
The alledged kidnappers are reportedly Pakistanis of British orgin, born, or having lived a long time in the UK.
Updated: The soldier in question is a Muslim.
