The poor Democrats they worked so hard and raised all that campain money to win Congress, and at the last minute, Cindy Sheehan snatches it from them like candy from a baby!
Hat tip, Stop the ACLU
House Democrats tried to unveil their lobbying reform package today, but their press conference was drowned out by chants from anti-war activists who want Congress to stop funding the Iraq war before taking on other issues.
Led by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a slain soldier, the protesters chanted “De-escalate, investigate, troops home now” as Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., began outlining the Democrats’ plans to ban lobbyist-funded travel and institute other ethics reforms. The press conference was held in the Cannon House Office Building in an area open to the public.
Emanuel finally gave up trying to be heard over the chants, and retreated to a caucus room where Democrats were meeting.
After Emmanuel left the podium, they let Sheehan take over the mic. Remember, this was supposed to be a press conference for the Democrats.
Hot Air has video of Sheehan taking the mic.
I think you had to be there in the 60s and early 70s to fully appreciate the damage the antiwar movement did to the Democratic Party. The party, in fact, has never entirely recovered.
The Democrats had an ambiguous relationship with the anti-American activists of that era. The activists focused their ire mainly on the Democrats--think Chicago 1968--but at the same time, they largely made their home in that party. The idea that history might be repeating itself must appall the Democrats' leadership.
One of the Democrats' problems during the Vietnam era was the fact that many Democrats came across as wimpy and indecisive in their responses to illegal and antisocial conduct by antiwar protesters. Recalling that history, Democrats who watch Emanuel Rahm in this video can only shudder. Rather than deal forcefully with the protestors, Rahm yielded the field to them and retreated inside the building. I sincerely hope this is not a portent for the future.
In other words, how can they stand up to terrorists if thay can't even stand up to a handful of radicals?
